The Sony 3D Personal Viewer HMD (head mounted display) is personal entertainment system that slips on over your eyes and changes the way you see. Literally. With twin hi-def (1280 x 720) 0.7-inch OLED screens, the HMD simulates the experience of a real life 750-inch movie theater screen as if being viewed from a distance of 20 meters, all in glorious HD or 3D. Additionally, there is a processor inside the headset that allows you connect to Blu-ray™ Disc, Playstation®3 and other devices, and the Dolby 5.1 audio system can be switched between four different surround modes - standard, cinema, game and music. All in all, it makes for an pretty damn immersive experience.
Why it's cool: Remember all those science fiction movies you've seen, dystopian or otherwise, where characters would slip on a pair of techie glasses and boom, they're playing games or scanning info or watching holographic displays? Well the Sony HMD isn't quite that... but it's on the track. And while the one pound weight isn't exactly feathery, at this point it might be the best we've got on the retail marketplace. If you're into new tech and watching movies at home in a big way, this might be right up your alley.
